Marvel NOW! Facebook Fanpage!
My Marvel NOW! Fanpage has been building nicely, linking to the latest MN! news at Marvel.com, Newsarama, Comic Book Resources and more - and tying in with it having smashed through the 5,000 fans mark, I'm producing my first exclusive feature for it here!
*CONTAINS HUGE SPIDER-MAN NEWS! STOP READING NOW IF YOU WANT TO AVOID SPIDER-SPOILERS!!!*
There are some big changes coming to the Spider-verse; a new Marvel Knights: Spider-Man series starts next month, Venom's series is ending...Scarlet Spider's series is reaching its climax with Scarlet Spider #25...
Doctor Octopus appears to be back from the dead in October in 'The Arms of The Octopus' - a story running through All-New X-Men Special #1, Indestructible Hulk Special #1 and Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #1 - something which naturally gets the attention of the Superior Spider-Man!
Meanwhile, in his own books, Superior Spider-Man reforms the Sinister Six - in a story arc beginning in next month's Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #5 - but to what end!? Then November kicks off major Spider-Event 'The Darkest Hour' in Superior Spider-Man #22 - which will see Venom taking on the Superior Spider-Man, and will introduce the Superior Venom!
So with all that going on for Ock-in-Spidey's-body, it doesn't look as though Peter Parker is gonna be back any time soon, right - ?
WRONG. In December, Peter Parker the Amazing Spider-Man returns with five special issues - Amazing Spider-Man #700.1-#700.5 - from a ton of writers and artists! A blizzard's crippling NY, Aunt May is in danger, Peter and Johnny Storm take on the Fantastic Four!? And what is The Black Lodge?
That's enough Spidey for now though, Poindexter, this wouldn't be a Sam Johnson Mighty Marvel Missive without mentioning my main man the Merc with a Mouth!
On the other side of 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' arc: in December's Deadpool #20, we're treated to another Deadpool flashback tale, as Wade Wilson goes all Kirby-style cosmic and teams with Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy; and then in Deadpool #21, artist Mike Hawthorne returns as Deadpool sets out to finally get his revenge on Gorman--the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who stiffed him on the bill for taking out the resurrected dead presidents.
If you never caught my interview with Mike, offering some intriguing insights into the Merc with a Mouth, you can find it here - and you can find tons more MN! News & Previews at my Marvel NOW! Facebook Fanpage here!

Superior Spider-Man spin-offs announced!
Superior Spider-Man week is kicking off with the announcement that plans for Doc Ock (currently running around in Spidey's body in my favorite comic of the moment) are going to go beyond Superior Spider-Man, with two new 'Superior'-tied books set to launch: The Superior Octopus and Superior Squad.
Writer of the Superior Squad mini-series, Wiat Hawt, talked to us; he couldn't give too much away about The Superior Octopus, though did offer this: "You'd have to ask Slott about that one. But one thing I can say is that Ock's not done with his mind-swapping tech; and perhaps we might just see a new Doctor Octopus co-existing alongside Superior Spider-Man...?"
Talking about his own book, Hawt said, "Superior Spider-Man readers will be aware that Ock has been pumping up his tech and using Spider-bots to locate criminals. What they don't know is that these same 'bots have been seeking out potential allies for Otto; allies that can form a team who can carry out Ock's work on an even greater scale--taking it beyond NY."
And just who are these allies going to be? Hawt continues, "Well, after his recent experience with The Vulture, Ock's written off any ideas about getting his old buddies away from the 'dark side'--and let's not forget, the world at large still thinks that Superior is the original Spider-Man. So Ock's looking for heroes to fill out his crew--but heroes who aren't afraid to go... shall we say, a little further than a typical Avenger might." The first issue of Superior Squad will see Ock filling out his roster, and while with most of the recruits you can see his rationing, with one of them, without knowing quite how Otto's mind works, you might be left scratching your head.
Two words: Blind Al.
"Anyone familiar with Otto's past will know it includes some history with Aunt May;" Ock's looking for some arm candy who can also kick ass. May's got a dodgy hip, so what's the next best thing? Someone who's previously impersonated May! [in Deadpool vol.1 #11]. Heck, maybe she could even do it again." Wait... What? "Mwuah ha ha ha ha!"...

Geek-Girl Interviews mash-up
With the new Variant Edition of Geek-Girl #0 and the Digital Edition of spin-off book Mr. Mash-Up #0 out now, I've been doing some interviews, and here's a mash-up (no pun intended) of some of the Q & A's from them. You can check out the full interviews by clicking on the names of the sites.
GeekSmash.com: How old were you when you first got into comic-books?
Sam: A little kid; then, as many do, I left them in my teen years, and then rediscovered them when something fresh caught my eye in the comic shop within London’s Virgin Megastore. That was Rob Liefeld’s run on New Mutants, which, as many are well aware, brought us the likes of Cable and Deadpool, and begat the original X-Force.
SpeakGeekyToMe.com: Tell us all a little about yourself and what got you into writing comics?
Sam: Well, I’m from London but I’ve lived in Sheffield, England since coming here to study a Masters degree in Creative Writing for Film & TV.
I was always interested in creative writing--and back when Wildstorm was an Image Comics studio, they ran a talent search contest wherein you’d submit story outlines featuring their characters. I did a couple for that, and then entered a couple of other talent searches and came joint-second in one Wizard comics mag was running with Malibu Comics, and by then I was hooked!
It took a lot of perseverance to break into comics, but since I did, about seven years ago, I’ve been getting stuff published every year, including a number of things featuring my Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman; and I had my first full color book, the Avengers-parodying The Almighties #1 out last year, which was well-received.
ReynardCity.com: Where did you get the idea for Geek-Girl?
Sam: Image studio Shadowline ran a ‘Who Wants to Create a Super-heroine?’ contest. I came up with a few ideas, and Ruby Kaye--the hot college chick who lands a pair of super-tech glasses that give her powers but, due to a glitch in them, also render her super-klutzy--was my favorite, and one I developed into what Geek-Girl is now.
Speak Geeky To Me: So for those who have read Geek-Girl #0, when can readers expect the next issue? And is there anything else already available with these characters?
Sam: Well, what’s just come out along with the Variant Edition [of Geek-Girl #0] is Mr. Mash-Up #0, which collects all of the appearances of Mash-Up outside of GG #0. This fella’ll also have an important role to play in the Geek-Girl mini-series; though right now I’m just trying-out artists for that.
GeekSmash: What are your top three favorite titles out right now?
Sam: Superior Spider-Man. It’s a bold thing they’ve done there, and a hell of a story we’re gonna see play out., I’d imagine. DC’s Dial H is a quirky little thing with offbeat protagonists and superheroes, which captures a little of the same kind of magic that Grant Morrison’s run on Doom Patrol had; which remains one of my biggest influences. Crazy ol’ Deadpool is always a character that interests me, and is a character I’m gunning to work on. I’ve got some ideas for the Merc with a Mouth and I have a pitch ready and waiting for the right time…
Reynard City: What advice would you have for people who want to start their own comic?
Sam: Well, with the internet what it is now and Print on Demand comic sites – and the market for Digital comics growing – there isn’t the financial risk there used to be in putting out a comic. Get a creative team together (forums like Penciljack and Digital Webbing are good places to find collaborators) and get it done!
GeekSmash: If you could ask anyone in history, alive or not, one question, who would it be and what would you ask?
Sam: Current Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso: “Who do I need to bribe to get a gig writing Deadpool?
GeekSmash: What projects are you working on?
Sam: Geek-Girl and Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman’s respective mini-series. I’ve been doing various things the last few years, but I’ve realized it’s time to make these two lovely ladies my focus. Pablo Zambrano, who I worked with on The Almighties, has recently joined the art team for Cabra and is doing a great job – particularly as it’s a much darker style than he employed for The Almighties.
Speak Geeky To Me: Finally, where can fans expect the story of Ruby, Trevor [Goldstein; inventor of Geek-Girl's glasses], and the super powered glasses to take them?
Sam: Ruby lands these power-endowing glasses almost by accident--in a game of drunken Strip Poker with Trevor and his buddy Jeff; and she’s not ready for what’s coming her way as a result of owning them--which is going to involve her being thrown in at the deep end of the ‘tights ‘n’ capes’ world. Plus, the glasses will have effects on her that she hasn’t bargained for.
(Right-click on image and Open in New Tab to enlarge)
As for Trevor--he spent a lot of time and money working on the glasses, so perhaps once he’s sobered up, he may not be so willing to let them go…
Geek-Girl #0 is available in Regular, Variant, and Digital/Kindle editions, along with the Digital Edition of Mr. Mash-Up #0 [print edition coming later this month] at www.geekgirlcomics.com

Marvel NOW! Fanpage - What's New?
You can find a ton of new stuff at my Marvel NOW! Fanpage on Facebook, including some Previews of this week's MN! books, one of which, Superior Spider-Man #2, I was really looking forward to, but... well... check out my Review for GeekSmash.com
Superior Spider-Man is currently doing well in my 'What's your Fav. MN! Book so far?' poll at the Fanpage; whether issue #2 will change that remains to be seen, but meanwhile there's also plenty more new shiz at the page to check out, including a sneak peak at what's coming up for the Avengers. You can find it all on Facebook here.

Sam Johnson Comics: 2013
So what's coming from me in the New Year? Well, on Jan 23rd we have a new Variant Edition of Geek-Girl #0 coming out, as well as Geek-Girl spin-off book Mr. Mash-Up #0; collecting all of Mash-Up's appearances outside of Geek-Girl #0 and featuring Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman, Pete the Pimp and Delfi Matrix.
Delfi and Mash-Up have a powerful connection and will both feature in the Geek-Girl mini-series I'm currently trying-out artists for. You can Preview and Pre-Order the Geek-Girl #0 Variant Edn and Mr. Mash-Up #0 at www.geekgirlcomics.com - where the Regular and Digital/Kindle edns of Geek-Girl #0 are available now!
I'm also expanding on my popular Marvel NOW! Facebook Fanpage by reviewing Marvel NOW! books for GeekSmash.com. Right now, you can check out my reviews of FF #1 & #2--which in the space of two issues has already become one of my favorites of the current Marvel line; and Avenging Spider-Man #15--which is effectively Superior Spider-Man #0. I'm more excited for what's coming in the Spidey books than I have been for any comic since Deadpool: DEAD, and I'll also be covering Superior Spider-Man #1 for GeekSmash.com when it hits next week!
Speaking of Deadpool, none of the above means I'll be neglecting my old buddy Wade Wilson--whom I'm gunning to work on--and I'll be keeping a close eye on what Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan will be doing with the Merc with a Mouth. The co-writers have said things will be getting darker once the 'Dead Presidents' story wraps in Deadpool #6; and that we can also look forward to the return of some of Deadpool's old friends...
You can find more Deadpool at my Marvel NOW! Deadpool FB Fanpage...
And all of that's just the beginning. Stay tuned! ;)

Marvel's future is NOW! Preview Part 3!
[UPDATED 10.17.12:] *CONTAINS SPOILERS*
Before we get onto the Marvel NOW! stuff, a mention that the Merc with a Mouth's smash-hit mini-series Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe is getting a sequel in January, in the form of Deadpool Killustrated. Deadpook Kills the MU's alternate reality Wade Wilson will be taking his Fourth Wall-breaking mission to destroy the fictional characters of the Multiverse to the 'Ideaverse,' where he will take on some of the world's most famous literary characters, in what looks like it might be the second in a trilogy of Deadpool Kills... mini-series.
You can find Deadpool Killustrated writer Cullen Bunn and editor Jordan White talking to Newsarama about the book here, and if you didn't catch the original Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe mini-series, you can find my Reviews of it here.
Meanwhile, over at New York Comic Con, writer Dan Slott has been revealing more on Marvel NOW! Spider-Man. *SPOILER WARNING* If you don't want anything from Amazing Spider-Man #700 and Superior Spider-Man #1 revealed, skip the bullet points below until you're past the next Spidey pic; for everyone else, here are the so-far-revealed facts about what's in store for the web-slinger:
. Amazing Spider-Man #698 will set things in motion for the explosive events of issue #700--to which Slott is anticipating a big reaction.
. Spidey will be getting it together with Mary Jane, but it won't be Peter-Parker-Spidey, as...
. ...it'll be someone new under the costume when Superior Spider-Man launches with Scarlet Spider's Ryan Stegman on board as artist for the first story arc (ASM's Humberto Ramos to return further down the line).
. Things are going to get 'dark and weird,' and our 'Superior Spidey' will have retractable claws among his attributes--and there's something up with his eyes...
. It's a new Spidey, but it's still Peter Parker's world--with (what's left of) Petey's supporting cast sticking around for Superior.
. There'll be a new Sinister Six, and Adrian Toomes, the original Vulture will return.
. For the first time since ASM's controversial 'One More Day' and 'One Moment In Time' stories, in which Peter traded his marriage to MJ (erasing it from history) to Mephisto in exchange for saving Aunt May's life, Mephisto appears on a Spidey cover (ASM #700). Whether he's also inside is TBD; I'm crossing my fingers that this issue will take care of that whole business.
So that's Spidey, but what of some of the other Marvel NOW! books? Well, courtesy of Newsarama, you can check out Previews of All New X-Men #1 here, and Thor: God of Thunder #1 here.
Meanwhile, Captain Marvel writer Kelly Sue DeConnick takes the helm of Avengers Assemble from November's issue #9 with a line-up that will include new additions Spider-Woman and Captain Marvel--at least one of whom will be joining the Avengers in their next movie--but that doesn't mean the other female Avenger, Black Widow, won't get her share of the spotlight...
In Avengers Assemble #12, DeConnick will be bringing the Widow’s past back to haunt her! "It was absolutely inspired by the ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ movie," says DeConnick. "As soon as the Widow said the line, ‘I have a lot of red in my ledger,’ I was like, 'Holy crap. I want to see that movie!’"
The most movie-connected of the Avengers books, DeConnick has revealed that the tone of her run will also be inspired by Joss Whedon's Avengers. You can find DeConnick's interview in full at marvel.com.
Agent Coulson is back in Nick Spencer & Luke Ross's Marvel NOW! Secret Avengers! Get the skinny at Entertainment Weekly here!
You can find writer Brian Michael Bendis talking about his plans for Guardians of the Galaxy with Newsarama here.
Writer Jeph Loeb discusses the new Nova with Comic Book Resources here, and below are a few more Marvel NOW! covers released at New York Comic Con...
