Doom Patrol #1 by Darcy Van Poelgeest & Niko Henrichon launching in September!

Grant Morrison's run on Doom Patrol is my greatest influence in writing Geek-Girl and Cabra Cini, and I'm excited to have just learned The World's Strangest Heroes will be getting a new series in September, written by Darcy Van Poelgeest (Little Bird, Precious Metal) and illustrated by Niko Henrichon (Spectators, Pride of Baghdad).

The Doom Patrol are broke. Adopting a heroes-for-hire business model to stave off financial and emotional ruin, the team finds itself responding to a 'simple case' of a missing cat.

But when this case proves to be far from simple, the team find themselves pulled into a truly out-of-this-world situation!

And elsewhere, beyond the view of Robotman, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man, and perhaps even beyond the veil of our reality, a ghost of the team’s past is preparing to cross into their world.

Doom Patrol #1 releases September 2nd.

Big things coming for Cabra Cini and friends

Hi, I just submitted Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman Vol.1 TPB to Kickstarter and it was instantly approved! And this marks just the beginning of big things coming for the 'Voodoo Lady' this year - but while I'm in the process of other Kickstarter fulfilment, we won't get too much into that just yet...

Cabra's tagline is, 'Take Jessica Jones, Deadpool and Doom Patrol and blend - and you get supernatural gun-for-hire, Cabra Cini.' So I'm obviously a fan of those characters. Two of them are making a comeback in 2026, and as well as Jessica Jones entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the forthcoming season of Daredevil Reborn, I'm excited for:

Written by Sam Humphries and illustrated by Geraldo Borges, Alias: Red Band #1 (of 5) - coming March 18th.

From Marvel's solicitation: "A series of grisly murders in Hell’s Kitchen pulls Jessica Jones into a mystery more sinister than she could’ve ever imagined. As the wife of Mayor Luke Cage, she’ll have to tread carefully as she forms a dangerous alliance with Typhoid Mary to track down the killer. But as she delves deeper into Hell’s Kitchen’s dark underbelly, the evidence she finds presents more questions than answers…"

Fresh off his smash-hit Deadpool/Batman comics, the Merc with a Mouth is getting a new ongoing series written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Geoff Shaw. "DANGEROUS. UNHINGED. DEADLY. Deadpool is a man on the brink, and that means the jobs are deadlier, the stakes are higher, and the humor is darker than ever before," reads Marvel's official description for Wade Wilson: Deadpool #1.

"But Wade Wilson isn't laughing. A dark memory haunts Deadpool, as a mysterious client leads him down a troubling path. This way lies redemption? No, something far worse. Wade can never be forgiven for what he's done..."

Coming out February 11th, you can check out a Preview here!:

Deadpool Editor's note: "This [September's Deadpool #6] is the first issue of a new era and killing Deadpool NOW would an INSANE thing to do. Which is exactly why we're doing it."

Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman #0 Deluxe live on Kickstarter

No longer willing to let her boyfriend/pimp treat her like dirt, Cabra Cini got lethal payback with the help of voodoo magik - and liked it. Voodoo became her new addiction and Cabra has cleaned up her act and forged a deadly new vocation…

Cabra Cini routinely utilizes her magik to access a dimension called The Infinite - 'Limbo's crazy cousin, locked away in the attic' - which for those who trespass upon it can serve as a dimensional gateway between where they are and wherever they want to go. A boon for Cabra in finding her 'hits'. But the ruler of The Infinite, The Rook, doesn't like Cabra abusing his dimension this way - and throws everything he can at her, physically and mentally, to 'dissuade' her from doing so.

NOW: Drug-dealer Jacob Trencher has been robbed, shot and left for dead - but using his occult magik he has survived: and hired Cabra Cini to find the person responsible and take care of things... which is going to put Cabra on a collision course with 'It girl' turned Superheroine Geek-Girl, as that person is a member of Geek-Girl's new Super-Team!

Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman #0 Deluxe is a Double-Sized issue, featuring Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman #0 - including Cabra Cini's origin story, for the first time with Color by Chunlin Zhao; and all of Cabra's appearances and related sub-plots from Geek-Girl #5-#9 - leading to the Cabra Cini Voodoo: Junkie Hitwoman Mini-Series and forthcoming Cabra Cini/Geek-Girl Crossover.

Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman #0 Deluxe is available on Kickstarter - along with all other issues of Cabra Cini - here!

Deadpool #1 Review (2022)

(Right-click on images and open link in new tab to enlarge)

It's the first issue of my favorite Marvel character Deadpool's new ongoing series, and I've been looking forward to this...

Wade Wilson is invited by The Atelier - a secret society of exclusive, highly-paid, glamourous assassins - to join their ranks if he can complete the task they assign him: kill Doctor Octopus within 48 Hours.

Another of my Marvel fav.s since his days as the Superior Spider-Man, Otto Octavius is gonna be a tough kill - even for someone with the Merc with a Mouth's skills - but there's a complication; en route to taking out Ock, Deadpool is kidnapped by the plantlife-controlling Harrower, and injected with a strain of Carnage symbiote.
The Harrower found the symbiote in a barely-alive state following the events of Absolute Carnage, and is looking for an incubator that - together with Harrower's powers of biofusion and biofission - can revitalize it and transform it into a creature capable of supplanting humans as Earth's dominant species. A creature that will follow The Harrower as its 'god'. Any attempts at moulding the creature this way have failed as a result of it destroying any host body it was placed in - but The Harrower believes Wade's super-healing-factor will be the solution to this problem.

Deadpool #1 artist Martin Coccolo has worked on the MwaM before in the Deadpool: Black, White & Red Mini-Series - but writer Alyssa Wong is - as far as I'm aware - a new voice to Deadpool. And she nails his voice right out of the gate.

Wong's going 'R' with Deadpool, which comes with a parental advisory rating, most notably on account of a couple of risque jokes that might go under the radar of a younger reader, were it not for Wade pointing a metaphorical arrow at one of them; and with what Deadpool now has growing in him, gore is guaranteed.

The briskly-paced Extra-Sized debut issue jumps back and forth in its timeline - briefly introducing us to the members of The Atelier along the way - some of whom look intriguingly weird, and one of whom - Valentine Vuong - is set up as Wade's potential new love interest. Deadpool's after-the-fact embarrasment at the pickup line he uses on her providing the funniest gag in the book, followed by him brainstorming and rejecting 'better' cringey pickup lines.

The art by Martin Coccolo is solid, Neeraj Menon's color art sometimes a little 'pencily'-looking - but all in all it's an appealing debut for this creative team: with an intriguing potential new direction for the Merc with a Mouth.

Though Wong seems to have Deadpool's character down, though - I'm not certain she has Doctor Octopus', with the few lines uttered by Ock during his brief appearance seeming out of character for him.

Doctor Octopus versus Deadpool is a fun concept that I hope Wong delivers well when it comes to fruition in issue #2 - which I will certainly be back for...

Geek-Girl Vol.3: Team Geek-Girl TPB Out Now!

A great Jumping-On point for the series, the new Team Geek-Girl TPB collects Geek-Girl #5-#9 - the first five issues of Geek-Girl's New Direction. Here's the Press Release:

Geek-Girl joins a Super-Team – and things are gonna get weird!

Created and written by Sam Johnson (The Almighties, Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman) and illustrated by C Granda (Charmed, Grimm Fairy Tales) - Geek-Girl is a series featuring attractive, popular Maine college co-ed Ruby Kaye – a girl used to getting whatever she wants – who lands a pair of power-inducing super-tech glasses.

Since gaining her powers, Geek-Girl (a moniker jokily given to Ruby by her BFF Summer after Ruby’s initial difficulty handling her newfound super-strength led to some klutzy actions) has blossomed from a self-satisfying ‘It’-Girl to the heroine of her city of Maine – taking down major-threat super-villain Lightning Storm and playing an integral part in stemming the crime wave that sprung up in the wake of the damage Lightning Storm did to Maine’s law enforcement.

In the process of this, Geek-Girl has caught the eye of a certain Mr. Johnny Carlyle – a morally questionable entrepreneur who is looking to put together a Super-Team. Johnson fills us in: “Johnny showed up previously in the Geek-Girl series as a super-tech weapons dealer who was suspected of selling his wares indiscriminately – which earned him a dressing down from Maine’s First Lady of Super-Heroing, Neon Girl, during the crime wave that was going on there – which she believes he may have contributed to.

“Johnny then stepped up and hooked Geek-Girl and Neon Girl up with a mysterious telekinetic called Tyler, who helped them turn things around in their fight against crime… and led Johnny to coming up with the idea of creating a super-team – headed by Geek-Girl!”

Johnson continues, “In the new Geek-Girl TPB, Team Geek-Girl, Ruby Kaye is handed the keys to her new super-hero HQ just as her would-be team-mates make their way there on a plane – but there’s an ‘incident’ during their flight, and they may not all make it!”

Without spoiling things, Johnson says that now that Geek-Girl is an ongoing series, ‘the incident’ is just the beginning of the weirdness that will be coming Ruby’s way – influenced by one of the writer’s favorite comic runs – Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol. “I love how out-there that series is, and it helped inspire a number of weird and wonderful ideas that I’ve wanted to bring to my comics - and now that GG’s ongoing, I have the right venue for them. Get ready for The Hall of Diamonds; potential arch-nemesis Mean Girl; The Infinite: Limbo’s ‘crazy cousin’ dimension; Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman - and that’s just in this first arc alone. Things are gonna get weird and Ruby’s in for a wild ride.”
