Geek-Girl News!
After selling out two printings, Geek-Girl #0 is going to a third print for December - and Ruby Kaye is getting her own model in the form of Lady Larkin, who will be appearing as GG on two new Ltd. Variant edns and making her debut in person at Thought Bubble comic con in Leeds, England on Nov 23rd!
The new editions will be launching exclusively at Thought Bubble before going on general release in December.
And that's not all, the scripts for issues #2 & #3 of the Geek-Girl mini-series are done, with art underway, and the artwork for Geek-Girl #1 is finished!
If you're not familiar with GG, she's a 'Little Miss Popular' named Ruby Kaye who lands a pair of super-tech glasses (invented by brainiac college geek Trevor Goldstein) in a game of Strip Poker. The specs give her flight powers, super-strength, and - due to a flaw in the glasses' programming - super-klutziness! And that's just the beginning of the changes the glasses will wreak on Ruby...
Here's brand new Preview art from the first issue of the in-the-works Geek-Girl mini-series from Carlos Granda - colored by Stéphan Lemineur!

You can find more of Lady Larkin's GG pics at her Facebook Page, and Geek-Girl #0 is still available in $1.00 Digital & Kindle editions at www.geekgirlcomics.com!

Geek-Girl Interviews mash-up
With the new Variant Edition of Geek-Girl #0 and the Digital Edition of spin-off book Mr. Mash-Up #0 out now, I've been doing some interviews, and here's a mash-up (no pun intended) of some of the Q & A's from them. You can check out the full interviews by clicking on the names of the sites.
GeekSmash.com: How old were you when you first got into comic-books?
Sam: A little kid; then, as many do, I left them in my teen years, and then rediscovered them when something fresh caught my eye in the comic shop within London’s Virgin Megastore. That was Rob Liefeld’s run on New Mutants, which, as many are well aware, brought us the likes of Cable and Deadpool, and begat the original X-Force.
SpeakGeekyToMe.com: Tell us all a little about yourself and what got you into writing comics?
Sam: Well, I’m from London but I’ve lived in Sheffield, England since coming here to study a Masters degree in Creative Writing for Film & TV.
I was always interested in creative writing--and back when Wildstorm was an Image Comics studio, they ran a talent search contest wherein you’d submit story outlines featuring their characters. I did a couple for that, and then entered a couple of other talent searches and came joint-second in one Wizard comics mag was running with Malibu Comics, and by then I was hooked!
It took a lot of perseverance to break into comics, but since I did, about seven years ago, I’ve been getting stuff published every year, including a number of things featuring my Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman; and I had my first full color book, the Avengers-parodying The Almighties #1 out last year, which was well-received.
ReynardCity.com: Where did you get the idea for Geek-Girl?
Sam: Image studio Shadowline ran a ‘Who Wants to Create a Super-heroine?’ contest. I came up with a few ideas, and Ruby Kaye--the hot college chick who lands a pair of super-tech glasses that give her powers but, due to a glitch in them, also render her super-klutzy--was my favorite, and one I developed into what Geek-Girl is now.
Speak Geeky To Me: So for those who have read Geek-Girl #0, when can readers expect the next issue? And is there anything else already available with these characters?
Sam: Well, what’s just come out along with the Variant Edition [of Geek-Girl #0] is Mr. Mash-Up #0, which collects all of the appearances of Mash-Up outside of GG #0. This fella’ll also have an important role to play in the Geek-Girl mini-series; though right now I’m just trying-out artists for that.
GeekSmash: What are your top three favorite titles out right now?
Sam: Superior Spider-Man. It’s a bold thing they’ve done there, and a hell of a story we’re gonna see play out., I’d imagine. DC’s Dial H is a quirky little thing with offbeat protagonists and superheroes, which captures a little of the same kind of magic that Grant Morrison’s run on Doom Patrol had; which remains one of my biggest influences. Crazy ol’ Deadpool is always a character that interests me, and is a character I’m gunning to work on. I’ve got some ideas for the Merc with a Mouth and I have a pitch ready and waiting for the right time…
Reynard City: What advice would you have for people who want to start their own comic?
Sam: Well, with the internet what it is now and Print on Demand comic sites – and the market for Digital comics growing – there isn’t the financial risk there used to be in putting out a comic. Get a creative team together (forums like Penciljack and Digital Webbing are good places to find collaborators) and get it done!
GeekSmash: If you could ask anyone in history, alive or not, one question, who would it be and what would you ask?
Sam: Current Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso: “Who do I need to bribe to get a gig writing Deadpool?
GeekSmash: What projects are you working on?
Sam: Geek-Girl and Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman’s respective mini-series. I’ve been doing various things the last few years, but I’ve realized it’s time to make these two lovely ladies my focus. Pablo Zambrano, who I worked with on The Almighties, has recently joined the art team for Cabra and is doing a great job – particularly as it’s a much darker style than he employed for The Almighties.
Speak Geeky To Me: Finally, where can fans expect the story of Ruby, Trevor [Goldstein; inventor of Geek-Girl's glasses], and the super powered glasses to take them?
Sam: Ruby lands these power-endowing glasses almost by accident--in a game of drunken Strip Poker with Trevor and his buddy Jeff; and she’s not ready for what’s coming her way as a result of owning them--which is going to involve her being thrown in at the deep end of the ‘tights ‘n’ capes’ world. Plus, the glasses will have effects on her that she hasn’t bargained for.
(Right-click on image and Open in New Tab to enlarge)
As for Trevor--he spent a lot of time and money working on the glasses, so perhaps once he’s sobered up, he may not be so willing to let them go…

Geek-Girl #0 Variant Edition, Mr. Mash-Up #0 Digital Edition, and Geek-Girl T-Shirts OUT NOW!
Here's the Press Release... ;)
“With Great Glasses comes Great Klutziness - and Weird Super-Villains!”
Cult favorite Geek-Girl gets a new Variant edition of her #0 issue and a spin-off book this month from Actuality Press!
When 'Little Miss Popular' Ruby Kaye lands a pair of super-tech glasses (invented by brainiac college geek Trevor Goldstein) in a game of Strip Poker, she's granted flight, super-strength, and - due to a flaw in the glasses' programming - super-klutziness!
And this is just the beginning of the changes the glasses will wreak on Ruby says creator/writer Sam Johnson (The Almighties, Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman); “The tech in the glasses that college chick ‘It Girl’ Ruby selfishly gets a hold of will have a profound effect on her - altering the very ways she thinks and acts. And ‘wreak’ is an appropriate choice of word, as the majority of her ‘cooler-than-thou’ clique - headed by the acid-tongued Karin Carpenter - ain’t gonna be too impressed with the changes the specs bring about in Ms. Kaye…
(Right-click on images and Open in New Tab to enlarge)
“As Ruby, she hangs with the Maine in-crowd, is top of the party-invite list, and has guys queuing up. As Geek-Girl… not so much.”
Although on the surface of it this might not seem like exactly the best thing to ever happen to Ruby, ‘surface’ is another appropriate word choice, Johnson continues: “How Ruby adapts to her new-found powers and their clique-alienating effects just might be the making of her - as she learns that with great glasses comes great responsibility and that, ‘geek-chic’ aside, being truly geeky can be truly sexy!”
That’s the social side of things, but if there’s a super-heroine, there must also be super-villains! “There certainly are,” continues Sam, “Geek-Girl is going to find herself smack bang in the middle of Maine’s tights ‘n’ capes scene in a way that she’s really not ready for.
“Both Super-villains and super-heroes will have significant roles to play in the forthcoming mini-series; the bizarre villain known as Mr. Mash-Up is introduced to Ruby’s world in her #0 issue, and you can find out who he is and how he got there in spin-off book Mr. Mash-Up #0 (click here for Preview).
Geek-Girl #0, written by Sam Johnson, illustrated by Sally Stone-Thompson and published by Actuality Press is available now in $2.50 Regular and Variant Editions and $1.00 Digital/Kindle Editions – along with Mr. Mash-Up #0 and Official Geek-Girl T-Shirts – at www.geekgirlcomics.com

Sam Johnson Comics: 2013
So what's coming from me in the New Year? Well, on Jan 23rd we have a new Variant Edition of Geek-Girl #0 coming out, as well as Geek-Girl spin-off book Mr. Mash-Up #0; collecting all of Mash-Up's appearances outside of Geek-Girl #0 and featuring Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman, Pete the Pimp and Delfi Matrix.
Delfi and Mash-Up have a powerful connection and will both feature in the Geek-Girl mini-series I'm currently trying-out artists for. You can Preview and Pre-Order the Geek-Girl #0 Variant Edn and Mr. Mash-Up #0 at www.geekgirlcomics.com - where the Regular and Digital/Kindle edns of Geek-Girl #0 are available now!
I'm also expanding on my popular Marvel NOW! Facebook Fanpage by reviewing Marvel NOW! books for GeekSmash.com. Right now, you can check out my reviews of FF #1 & #2--which in the space of two issues has already become one of my favorites of the current Marvel line; and Avenging Spider-Man #15--which is effectively Superior Spider-Man #0. I'm more excited for what's coming in the Spidey books than I have been for any comic since Deadpool: DEAD, and I'll also be covering Superior Spider-Man #1 for GeekSmash.com when it hits next week!
Speaking of Deadpool, none of the above means I'll be neglecting my old buddy Wade Wilson--whom I'm gunning to work on--and I'll be keeping a close eye on what Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan will be doing with the Merc with a Mouth. The co-writers have said things will be getting darker once the 'Dead Presidents' story wraps in Deadpool #6; and that we can also look forward to the return of some of Deadpool's old friends...
You can find more Deadpool at my Marvel NOW! Deadpool FB Fanpage...
And all of that's just the beginning. Stay tuned! ;)

Geek-Girl has a new website and new Variant and Digital editions of her #0 issue out now!
From the Press Release...
After hopelessly crushing on waitress Mariella Sandbach for six months, brainiac college geek Trevor Goldstein has come up with a way to give him the edge over Mariella’s boyfriend and finally win her over; he’s invented super-tech glasses that will make him into a super-hero – and Mariella’s gonna swoon into his arms, ‘cos, “Who wouldn’t, right?”
At least… that’s the plan...
The specs wind up in the scheming hands of hot, popular college chick Ruby Kaye. “Ruby is used to getting anything she wants, and when she hears about Trevor’s glasses, they become this week’s ‘must have,’” says creator/writer Sam Johnson (The Almighties, Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman). “Manipulating Trevor and his buddy Jeff by their libidos gets them into her hands quite easily – but she’s gonna get a LOT more than she’s bargained for.”
Johnson continues, “The glasses are the latest in a line of Trevor’s attempts to make superpower-endowing specs, but though he believes this one to be successful, while the glasses do grant Ruby super-strength and flight powers, there’s a glitch in them: causing them to mess with Ruby’s brainwaves and make her super-klutzy.
“Her cooler-than-thou clique are none too impressed with the effects the glasses have on Ms. Kaye…” says Johnson; “with the exception of her best friend Summer. The daughter of a hardcore comicbook geek, Summer is excitable about the idea of Ruby using her newfound powers to fight crime…”
So, not too great for Ruby’s social life, but she’s gonna kick ass as Geek-Girl, right? “Whatever problems the glasses cause Ruby in her social circle, they’re nothing compared to what she’s going to have in store as Geek-Girl,” says Johnson, “and klutziness is just the first of the changes the glasses will wreak on Ruby as she dons a cape and costume and naively enters the world of super-heroes – and super-villains!”
Geek-Girl #0, written by Sam Johnson, illustrated by Sally Stone-Thompson and published by Actuality Press is available in $2.50 Regular and $1.00 Digital editions at www.geekgirlcomics.com (where you can also check out a Preview of the book) And US customers can Pre-Order the $2.50 Limited Variant Edition - which comes out on Jan 23rd 2013 - here!
