Geek-Girl: Crime War Kickstarter

After 'Little Miss Popular' Ruby Kaye landed a pair of power-inducing super-tech glasses from her college's resident brainiac, Ruby alienated the majority of her clique while klutzily trying to demonstrate her newfound abilities – accidentally knocking drinks over their expensive designer dresses. Her BFF Summer James was into what Ruby could do now, though – and pushed her into trying to be a super-hero – jokily giving her the moniker 'Geek-Girl,' following her actions.

In a desperate fight to save her city of Maine from mysterious new villain Lightning Storm, Ruby gave her all... and neither she nor Lightning Storm were left standing... Now, new-crooks-on-block The League of Larcenists look to grow in number and capitalize on the hole in law enforcement left by Lightning Storm. And in Ruby's absence, Summer has picked up the glasses and taken on the mantle of Geek-Girl...

All four issues of our new Geek-Girl Crime War Mini-Series are available to Order/Pre-Order at the Kickstarter running through October - where you can also get Vol.1, Ltd Variants and Prints...

You can listen to me talking more about the series on The Two Gay Geeks show here - and check out the Kickstarter here!

What Ever Happened to Ruby Kaye?

(right-click on images and 'open in new tab' to enlarge)

Mysterious new villain Lightning Storm attacked rookie super-hero Ruby Kaye (a.k.a. Geek-Girl)'s city of Maine - destroying points of authority, including police stations and Portland City Hall - in a bid to take control of Maine. In a desperate battle to the end, Ruby took her down, but not before seemingly being electrocuted by Lightning Storm's powers.

In the wake of Lightning Storm's actions - in which she also took Neon Girl (Maine's Numero Uno Super-Heroine) off the map, destroying her hand and putting her in hospital - law-enforcement is severely depleted, there's a crime wave going on, and new-crooks-on-the-block The League of Larcenists are looking to clean up and grow in number.

So where's our Geek-Girl in all of this? Find out on Free Comic Book Day 2018 - May 5 - when Free Digital Comic Geek-Girl: Whatever Happened to Ruby Kaye? hits - featuring material from Geek-Girl vol.1 & and the forthcoming vol.2 - setting up the new Geek-Girl #1, also coming in May!

If you're already on the Geek-Girl Mailing List you'll be getting a copy of the free digital comic Geek-Girl: Whatever Happened... emailed to you on its release day! :)

Geek-Girl vol.1: Lightning Strikes! OUT NOW

Here's the Press Release... ;)

Created and written by by Sam Johnson (The Almighties, Cabra Cini) and illustrated by Carlos Granda (Grimm Fairy Tales, Charmed), in Geek-Girl vol.1: Lightning Strikes! (collecting the first 4-issue Geek-Girl Mini-Series) we meet attractive, popular Maine college coed Ruby Kaye. Ruby is a girl used to getting anything she wants; and when she overhears Trevor Goldstein, the resident college brainiac, talking about super-tech glasses he’s invented, she decides she wants them!

Ruby and her friend Stacey get Trevor and his buddy drunk, and Ruby wins the glasses off Trevor in a game of Strip Poker. She’s granted flight and super-strength, but – due to a flaw in the glasses’ programming – also lands herself with super-klutziness! And this is just the beginning of the changes the glasses are going to wreak on Ruby…

“When we’re introduced to Ruby, she’s wearing the specs and is flying around in a super-hero costume, looking for crime, chatting to her BFF Summer on her cellphone, questioning if she’s ‘doing it right’; because she’s been at this a couple nights now and nothing’s happening,” says creator/writer Johnson. “But then something does happen. Right in front of Ruby, Neon Girl – Maine’s resident big-shot Super-Heroine – is blasted through a billboard by a mysterious new villain.

“Neon Girl is hospitalized by this extremely powerful, enigmatic woman, Lightning Storm, who seems to have come from nowhere,” says Johnson, “and a scared Ruby reveals how she got the glasses on a whim, how it was her friend Summer who made her a costume and came up with a superhero name for her – and how she doesn’t really know what she’s doing,” Johnson continues. “But this isn’t a point of view the no-nonsense Neon Girl has any time for; her attitude is that ‘Geek-Girl’ has super powers and sure dresses like a superheroine, so she needs to step up and stop Lightning Storm!” says Johnson.

And while Ms. Kaye’s trying to get her head around this, things have taken a hit in her social life; thanks to the side effects of the glasses, the only evidence she’s provided her ‘cooler-than-thou’ clique of her powers has involved knocking drinks over them – alienating her from all but Summer. Johnson concludes, “So with a social life in tatters and a new status she doesn’t really understand, Ruby has to try and take on an extremely dangerous force who’s taken down someone who’s like a hundred times better at super-heroing than she is. Let’s see how that goes…”

“Amazingly good debut with a new character that totally fits into today’s younger generation of doing before thinking.”
