Geek-Girl Vol.3: Team Geek-Girl TPB Out Now!

A great Jumping-On point for the series, the new Team Geek-Girl TPB collects Geek-Girl #5-#9 - the first five issues of Geek-Girl's New Direction. Here's the Press Release:

Geek-Girl joins a Super-Team – and things are gonna get weird!

Created and written by Sam Johnson (The Almighties, Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman) and illustrated by C Granda (Charmed, Grimm Fairy Tales) - Geek-Girl is a series featuring attractive, popular Maine college co-ed Ruby Kaye – a girl used to getting whatever she wants – who lands a pair of power-inducing super-tech glasses.

Since gaining her powers, Geek-Girl (a moniker jokily given to Ruby by her BFF Summer after Ruby’s initial difficulty handling her newfound super-strength led to some klutzy actions) has blossomed from a self-satisfying ‘It’-Girl to the heroine of her city of Maine – taking down major-threat super-villain Lightning Storm and playing an integral part in stemming the crime wave that sprung up in the wake of the damage Lightning Storm did to Maine’s law enforcement.

In the process of this, Geek-Girl has caught the eye of a certain Mr. Johnny Carlyle – a morally questionable entrepreneur who is looking to put together a Super-Team. Johnson fills us in: “Johnny showed up previously in the Geek-Girl series as a super-tech weapons dealer who was suspected of selling his wares indiscriminately – which earned him a dressing down from Maine’s First Lady of Super-Heroing, Neon Girl, during the crime wave that was going on there – which she believes he may have contributed to.

“Johnny then stepped up and hooked Geek-Girl and Neon Girl up with a mysterious telekinetic called Tyler, who helped them turn things around in their fight against crime… and led Johnny to coming up with the idea of creating a super-team – headed by Geek-Girl!”

Johnson continues, “In the new Geek-Girl TPB, Team Geek-Girl, Ruby Kaye is handed the keys to her new super-hero HQ just as her would-be team-mates make their way there on a plane – but there’s an ‘incident’ during their flight, and they may not all make it!”

Without spoiling things, Johnson says that now that Geek-Girl is an ongoing series, ‘the incident’ is just the beginning of the weirdness that will be coming Ruby’s way – influenced by one of the writer’s favorite comic runs – Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol. “I love how out-there that series is, and it helped inspire a number of weird and wonderful ideas that I’ve wanted to bring to my comics - and now that GG’s ongoing, I have the right venue for them. Get ready for The Hall of Diamonds; potential arch-nemesis Mean Girl; The Infinite: Limbo’s ‘crazy cousin’ dimension; Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman - and that’s just in this first arc alone. Things are gonna get weird and Ruby’s in for a wild ride.”

Geek-Girl #5 Deluxe Edition and Geek-Girl: Incoming Out Now

The beginning of Ruby Kaye’s New Direction fronting a Super-Team is now available, remastered, with 12 pages of New Material, in the Geek-Girl #5 Deluxe Edition with cover by Sun Khamunaki (Lady Death, Red Sonja); and, releasing simultaneously, Geek-Girl: Incoming features just the new material from this.

We’re going to be introducing two new characters coming to the Geek-Girl series as Ruby’s Super-Team embarks on their adventures. Mean Girl – a crooked valley girl with super-tech – is setting herself up to potentially be a nemesis for GG; and Pete the Pimp is set to play a significant role in Summer’s life!

That doesn’t mean Summer will be turning to prostitution :) Ruby’s BFF Summer is basically in love with the whole Ruby-being-a-Superheroine thing, and she desperately wants something like it for herself… This ambition is set to take her down some dark alleys, among which, the shady Pete ‘The Pimp’ Stenson resides… and he has a connection to a source of super-powers…

Stenson features in a 7-Page tie-in strip illustrated by Meisha Mimotofu, colored by regular Geek-Girl series colorist Chunlin Zhao, alongside a preview of Mean Girl’s introduction, and a peek inside the Super-Team’s HQ. There’s a lot about the HQ that Ruby and her team-mates aren’t aware of; Grant Morrison’s out-there run on Doom Patrol is my biggest influence, and that’s going to play a part in the weirdness that inhabits this place…

Meanwhile, Mean Girl is a character who, with her, ‘like, totally-Valley-Girl-speak?’ is a character that’s great fun to write, but is also going to present a very serious threat to GG’s Team, and the Geek-Girl #5 Deluxe Edition is a great place to jump on board the Geek-Girl series for what’s to come…

Geek-Girl #5 Deluxe Edition - and Ltd ‘Striking’ Variant – with covers by Sun Khamunaki, and Geek-Girl: Incoming, featuring the new material from these, are available now at www.geekgirlcomics.com or at Comixology (for Digital Editions) and eBay via the buttons below.

Geek-Girl 'Tights 'n' Capes' Coming Soon!

Geek-Girl is going to be fronting a Super-Team, backed by (morally dubious) entrepreneur Johnny Carlyle - but as the team are coming together, things take an unexpected turn... So Ruby Kaye (a.k.a Geek-Girl), BFF Summer and new team-mate The Minger - now getting a night off - meet Ruby and Summer's (mean) girl friends at an outlandish, fancy-dress club nite - themed on Seinfeld's-alternative-xmas, Festivus. Ruby wants to go incognito, and Summer gets to go in the Geek-Girl costume and glasses - with powers!

But meanwhile, a guy with red skin and his young female associate are tailing them, someone is contacting the dead, Johnny Carlyle's right-hand man Digger Mensch is having conflict with his super-villain pals 'cos of being involved with the super-team - and there's the introduction of Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman!

All coming to the new Geek-Girl 2-Part Story Arc 'Tights 'n' Capes' in Geek-Girl #6 & #7 - releasing September 9 and 23!

I've referenced a number of times how Grant Morrison's run on Doom Patrol is my greatest influence, and I'm gonna be bringing it in this arc. I came up with Cabra and her debut scene by thinking in stream-of-consciousness 'weird mode;' it's one of my favorite scenes I've written, but I needed an ongoing series for it in order to fit the arc that follows for her character... This is where that begins! And if you're not familiar with Cabra Cini I'm excited for you to meet her in the pages of Geek-Girl, where she will play a major role!

My Doom Patrol/weirdness influence also comes into play in 'Tights 'n' Capes' with the introduction of the enigmatic Teyla...

...who appears to be stalking Geek-Girl. And look out for nods to DP fan favorite characters Danny the Street and Flex Mentallo (as a clubber fancy-dresses as him) - plus more weirdness!

Geek-Girl: Crime War Kickstarter

After 'Little Miss Popular' Ruby Kaye landed a pair of power-inducing super-tech glasses from her college's resident brainiac, Ruby alienated the majority of her clique while klutzily trying to demonstrate her newfound abilities – accidentally knocking drinks over their expensive designer dresses. Her BFF Summer James was into what Ruby could do now, though – and pushed her into trying to be a super-hero – jokily giving her the moniker 'Geek-Girl,' following her actions.

In a desperate fight to save her city of Maine from mysterious new villain Lightning Storm, Ruby gave her all... and neither she nor Lightning Storm were left standing... Now, new-crooks-on-block The League of Larcenists look to grow in number and capitalize on the hole in law enforcement left by Lightning Storm. And in Ruby's absence, Summer has picked up the glasses and taken on the mantle of Geek-Girl...

All four issues of our new Geek-Girl Crime War Mini-Series are available to Order/Pre-Order at the Kickstarter running through October - where you can also get Vol.1, Ltd Variants and Prints...

Geek-Girl #2: introducing Chromex

Summer James, the temporary Geek-Girl, has got her work cut out for her in next week's Geek-Girl #2 when she takes on - without the Geek-Girl powers(!) - Chromex, a quirky new character who has a pseudo-'street' way of talking, and is among those taking advantage of the hole in law enforcement in Maine, following the damage done by Lightning Storm in Geek-Girl vol.1.

You can check out Preview pages of Chromex's debut - from GG artist Carlos Granda's roughs-to a finished page, colored by Chunlin Zhao and lettered by Paul McLaren, below!

Geek-Girl #4 - all three teasers and soundtrack!?

Mysterious super-villain Lightning Storm came out of nowhere and hospitalized Maine's long-term resident super-heroes, Neon Girl and Pit Bull. Neon Girl tasked new-hero-on-the-block Ruby Kaye a.k.a. Geek-Girl with finding and stopping her. As Lightning Storm's threat escalates, it's time for Ruby to deliver. Ready or not.

Geek-Girl #4 is Out Now, and you can check out the teasers at the links below.

Geek-Girl #4 Teaser #1

Geek-Girl #4 Teaser #2

Geek-Girl #4 Teaser #3

One of the reasons I signed to publisher Markosia is I'm aiming to get a Geek-Girl movie made, and they can help with that, having already had some of their other projects picked up for film/TV.

I've always had Leona Lewis' emotional cover of Snow Patrol's Run in mind for the climax of a Geek-Girl movie, and you can see how that feels if you press play on it here when you get to Page 7 (below) while reading Geek-Girl #4.

The story title for Geek-Girl #4, 'Run', is taken from this song, and it's what Ruby feels like she wants to do, faced with the huge threat of Lightning Storm. But best friend Summer is there for her, routing for her, willing her to be the hero she knows Ruby can - so when you hear the lyrics while reading the comic, think of them from Summer's point of view.

I like the feel of it and I hope you do, too. Let me know what you think. And if you haven't got Geek-Girl #4 yet, it's available in Regular, Variant, Digital and Super-Limited Variant editions here at the Geek-Girl site, along with the other three issues of the Mini-Series.
