A message from the Future! About Deadpool! For YOU!

Following the success of Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan's run on Deadpool, in which S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Preston's consciousness was trapped in Wade Wilson's mind - in 2016 the powers that be thought it'd be a smart move to give another comedic writer, Tyler Perry, the chance to work his magic on the Merc with a Mouth.

It wasn't.

After years of raising my profile with my comics Geek-Girl, Cabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman, and The Almighties - showcasing that I had the skillz to give good MwaM - poised to make my pitch, my dreams were snatched away from me and then shattered in a mess of mixed metaphors when Perry did a switcheroo with Deadpool and Preston.

The writer/director/actor put Deadpool in the body of a generously-proportioned black lady and leave the mercenary game to 'devote more time to tacos' - and descended the Merc with a Mouth into sitcom Hell - taking his sales with him.

The book got canned before I ever got my shot at writing my beloved Merc with a Mouth.

Dream over?...

...Not on my watch, Poindexter!. I determined to travel back in time to the point where Deadpool was at his most accessible in a bid to get so many new readers to jump on Deadpool books that the numbers would be stronger than even Perry's woman-shaped-ham-fistedness could dismantle.

That time is 1.15.14 - which I'm calling Day of the Deadpool; when Night of the Living Deadpool #1 hits, Ghost Rider joins the Merc's team in the All-New Marvel NOW! jump-on issue of Thunderbolts, and the first part of Wade's Digital Comic Deadpool: The Gauntlet comes out in print for FREE at your local comic shop!

Deadpool #21 Review - Deadpool vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. Part 1

EXCLUSIVE FIRST REVIEW!

Back in the the first story arc of Deadpool's current ongoing series, Wade Wilson was hired by S.H.I.E.L.D. to take down a horde of turned-evil resurrected dead presidents. Teamed with S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Preston, Deadpool pulled this off--but not without Preston getting taken out and her consciousness transferred into Wade's mind by his buddy Necromancer Mike... and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Gorman stiffing Deadpool on the bill.

It's time to get Preston back into a body, and for the Merc with a Mouth to get payback on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Gorman. Deadpool vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. starts here--and if you like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D but would enjoy a spicier, more out-there take on Nick Fury's crew, you've come to the right place...

Deadpool's been through some trauma recently, discovering that the Weapon Plus program had been harvesting his regenerating organs and messing with his memories; and when he went to get some answers, he learned that he has a daughter he never knew about, and, with no memories of its mother, discovered the woman dead and the child missing.

The issue begins with Doctor Strange giving Deadpool's mind a check-up (it's not healthy - as per usual) and trying to help Agent Preston get out of it; Strange surmising that the answer may lie with her old employers, S.H.I.E.L.D.

Meanwhile, having now learned of Preston's predicament from Necromancer Mike, her sometime-sidekick, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Adsit checks in at S.H.I.E.L.D.--through a somewhat quirky secret entrance--with designs on getting a LMD robotic clone (or Life Model Decoy) of Preston made, to transfer her consciousness into. But it turns out there's already one in existence, and it's out there dealing S.H.I.E.L.D. arms, selling drugs and raking lawns(!?!).

It also turns out that Agent Gorman is secretly behind this, and when Adsit reports to Gorman on his findings--revealing to him that Agent Preston's in Wade's head--Gorman ain't too pleased to learn the real Preston's alive and, once he's despatched Adsit, goes about setting a $10,000,000 million price on Deadpool's head.

Various super-villains who've been wronged by Deadpool in the past take up the offer, but it's Crossbones who's first to the punch, happening on Deadpool leaving a Tyler Perry movie Preston wanted to see (Wade having shot himself in the head to get out of it--firmly answering where he stands on any similarities drawn between Perry's dressing-up-as-large-black-women schtick and Agent Preston inhabiting his body.)

Despite his recent hardships, Deadpool's battle with Crossbones demonstrates his inventive and comical sides are still firmly intact--before we cut to Agent Adsit meeting another S.H.I.E.L.D. operative...and a twist in the tale.

With what writers Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan having been doing on Deadpool lately, they've been making this run the book's best since the halcyon days of Joe Kelly; and that is strengthened further here in a solid and intriguing opening to the Deadpool vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. arc--solidly illustrated by Mike Hawthorne, who is proving to be the best-fitting of this series' rotating artists. If you ever stopped reading Deadpool, or you've never tried it, this might be the issue to get onboard...

Deadpool #8 & Deadpool Killustrated #4 Previews

Deadpool Preview - issues #7 & #8

Next up for the Merc with a Mouth--it's flashback time as we visit the end of the 'Bronze Age' and find that Wade Wilson used to run around with a cape, headband, and a logo on his chest ripped off of Daredevil's!

Evoking fond memories of the classic Deadpool story from vol.1 in which Deadpool travels back in time to old skool Amazing Spider-Man with his roommate/hostage Blind Al, Deadpool #7 also sets up the next story arc...

Following the events of Deadpool #1-#6, dead S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Preston is inhabiting the Merc with a Mouth's brain--but when Wade makes a deal with a demon to collect the souls of the damned, it looks like it's Preston's soul on the line if he doesn't deliver.

Deadpool Preview

Deadpool's got his healing factor back, taken out a bunch of undead Presidents, and made some new friends--necromancer Michael, who made a deal with the devil to bring the prez's back; the ghost of Benjamin Franklin, who was inadvertently brought with them; and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Preston (whose consciousness Michael transferred into Deadpool's head for safekeeping when her body was killed). Which brings us to... then:

Following Deadpool #7--for which artist Scott Koblish teamed with Deadpool co-writers Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan to introduce the demon Vetis in a flashback-to-the-'80s story--in Deadpool #13 we're going back to the '70s for the Merc with a Mouth to team with the original Heroes for Hire, Power Man & Iron Fist, in a flashback tale that introduces another new/old threat to Deadpool.

But before/after that (anyone else's head hurting?), hot off the back of his team-up of sorts with the Superior Spider-Man in Deadpool #10, Wade will be clashing with Daredevil and the Black Widow in Deadpool #11, before facing Mephisto in Deadpool #12, when he tries to get his pal Michael the necromancer freed from the deal Mike made with the demon Vetis.

Gerry Duggan has also stated in an interview with Comic Book Resources that he and co-writer Brian Posehn are aiming to shed more light on who Deadpool is (without eliminating the full mystery his history is shrouded in). There are signs of this in the trips inside Wade Wilson's head we took in their Deadpools #8 & #9, and I'm greatly intrigued for it. Whether this will tap into the whole Deadpool-did-or-didn't-steal-the-Wade-Wilson-identity thing remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the threat introduced in Deadpool #13's flashback issue is brought into present day in Deadpool #14; then we're going to be returning to Weapon X territory (the program that, for those who don't know, halted Deadpool's cancer by giving him a super-charged healing factor--and ruining his physical appearance). In recent issues, it's been revealed that a mysterious group of shady characters have been harvesting Wade's regenerating organs for years (unbeknown to Deadpool)--and apparently these peeps have ties to Weapon X.

This is gonna bring the Merc with a Mouth, Captain America and Wolverine together to investigate in the upcoming 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' 5-part arc beginning in Deadpool #15--which also introduces another Weapon X subject--one who's gunning for Wade.

While this is all going on, I'm still working on stuff that doubles to show I've got the skillz to work on the Merc with a Mouth myself; I've started to flesh out plans for an all-new The Almighties #1, which will follow Almighties Origins (coming later this year), and these plans include the introduction of my Deadpool-parodying character Wayne Winston, who will be joining the team.
