I haven't checked in on the Merc with a Mouth here in awhile, and - having gone a little quiet (dead) - Deadpool is making a big comeback with a new #1 in November from Gerry Duggan & Mike Hawthorne - and is joining the Uncanny Avengers in October!

Wade Wilson will also be teaming up with Spider-Man for an ongoing series from the legendary Deadpool team of Joe Kelly & Ed McGuinness, and re-teaming with Cable for new 6-issue mini-series Deadpool & Cable: Split Second from Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza and artist Reilly Brown.

Deadpool #25.NOW! Preview

Deadpool is enjoying a renaissance under writers Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan, with a great art team, headed by Mike Hawthorne. Deadpool gets the All-New Marvel NOW! treatment with next week's Deadpool #25 - and in typical Merc with a Mouth fashion, his 'jump-on' issue comes at the end of his current story arc!

To bring you up to speed, Wade Wilson is out to get revenge on former S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Gorman for stiffing him on a bill. Gorman used the money to put a price on Deadpool's head; Crossbones came gunning for Wade, but was dispatched - tied to a hot air balloon.

Crossbones then escaped this and has now tracked Deadpool down...

Oh yeah, and wackadoodle Wade now has a new voice in his head.

Deadpool #21 Review - Deadpool vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. Part 1

EXCLUSIVE FIRST REVIEW!

Back in the the first story arc of Deadpool's current ongoing series, Wade Wilson was hired by S.H.I.E.L.D. to take down a horde of turned-evil resurrected dead presidents. Teamed with S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Preston, Deadpool pulled this off--but not without Preston getting taken out and her consciousness transferred into Wade's mind by his buddy Necromancer Mike... and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Gorman stiffing Deadpool on the bill.

It's time to get Preston back into a body, and for the Merc with a Mouth to get payback on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Gorman. Deadpool vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. starts here--and if you like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D but would enjoy a spicier, more out-there take on Nick Fury's crew, you've come to the right place...

Deadpool's been through some trauma recently, discovering that the Weapon Plus program had been harvesting his regenerating organs and messing with his memories; and when he went to get some answers, he learned that he has a daughter he never knew about, and, with no memories of its mother, discovered the woman dead and the child missing.

The issue begins with Doctor Strange giving Deadpool's mind a check-up (it's not healthy - as per usual) and trying to help Agent Preston get out of it; Strange surmising that the answer may lie with her old employers, S.H.I.E.L.D.

Meanwhile, having now learned of Preston's predicament from Necromancer Mike, her sometime-sidekick, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Adsit checks in at S.H.I.E.L.D.--through a somewhat quirky secret entrance--with designs on getting a LMD robotic clone (or Life Model Decoy) of Preston made, to transfer her consciousness into. But it turns out there's already one in existence, and it's out there dealing S.H.I.E.L.D. arms, selling drugs and raking lawns(!?!).

It also turns out that Agent Gorman is secretly behind this, and when Adsit reports to Gorman on his findings--revealing to him that Agent Preston's in Wade's head--Gorman ain't too pleased to learn the real Preston's alive and, once he's despatched Adsit, goes about setting a $10,000,000 million price on Deadpool's head.

Various super-villains who've been wronged by Deadpool in the past take up the offer, but it's Crossbones who's first to the punch, happening on Deadpool leaving a Tyler Perry movie Preston wanted to see (Wade having shot himself in the head to get out of it--firmly answering where he stands on any similarities drawn between Perry's dressing-up-as-large-black-women schtick and Agent Preston inhabiting his body.)

Despite his recent hardships, Deadpool's battle with Crossbones demonstrates his inventive and comical sides are still firmly intact--before we cut to Agent Adsit meeting another S.H.I.E.L.D. operative...and a twist in the tale.

With what writers Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan having been doing on Deadpool lately, they've been making this run the book's best since the halcyon days of Joe Kelly; and that is strengthened further here in a solid and intriguing opening to the Deadpool vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. arc--solidly illustrated by Mike Hawthorne, who is proving to be the best-fitting of this series' rotating artists. If you ever stopped reading Deadpool, or you've never tried it, this might be the issue to get onboard...

Next week's issue of Deadpool sees Wade Wilson going all cosmic-Kirby on our ass in another flashback issue - before Deadpool #21 kicks off the Deadpool vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. arc, in which the Merc with a Mouth sets out to get revenge on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Gorman for stiffing him during the Dead Presidents affair.

Deadpool #8 Exclusive first Review

For me, Marvel NOW! Deadpool writers Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan started to find their 'Pool voice with Deadpool #7--a 'previously unseen' tale from Wade Wilson's past, in which he made a deal with a demon and then reneged on it--and that voice is strengthened in Deadpool #8, the first part of the new story arc...

Here, to save one of his new friends, the Merc with a Mouth is tasked with reclaiming the souls of four guys who've sold theirs to the Devil...

We begin the issue by joining dead S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Preston inside Deadpool's mind; a result of one of his other new buddies, Necromancer Michael, magicking her consciousness into Wade's for storage when she was killed.

Deadpool's set up a 'welcome party' for Preston--with pizza, music, mini Deadpools running around, and floating guns. Yeah. We're through the looking glass here, and from previews I've seen, this is just gonna be our first visit to the inside of Wade Wilson's brain, and I'm looking forward to more.

Preston isn't. She wants out. But while she's here, Deadpool does her a solid and goes and pays her kid a visit in his bedroom, to let him know she's actually still alive--enabling Preston to speak through Deadpool's mouth--before her husband barges in and shoots him in the ass.

This being 'the regeneratin' degenerate,' it's gonna take more than that to floor him, though, and it's not long before he's back in the ice cream van he's just stolen, about to head on his merry way--until he's interrupted by the return of Vetis--the demon from last issue--looking somewhat worse for wear.

Now sporting face wounds that will never heal as a punishment for fudging the deal he made with Deadpool (Wade was supposed to get alcoholic Iron Man drunk and ruin him--but instead, put Tony Stark's armor on and went on a bender himself), Vetis has been let out of Hell for bad behaviour as a result of another deal he made--with Necromancer Michael. This deal led to the previous story arc's undead Presidents' onslaught on the Earth; Vetis is prepared to let the soul-claiming parts of his deals with both Michael and Wade slide if Deadpool takes down the four other people on the list they collectively make up.

Wade puts his head together with the rest of his new crew, Michael, Preston, and the ghost of Benjamin Franklin(!), and they resolve to play along with Vetis's game for now--but to also use one of the people on the list (once dead) as a new host body for Agent Preston (Franklin believes he knows where he can find a spell that Michael could utilize to make the switch).

From here, Deadpool swings into action singing a pastiche of the old Spider-Man TV show theme tune as he takes on Corrado Coloruno, the first guy on Vetis's hit list--a punk who sold his soul for invulnerablity; and for the first time in awhile, the Merc with a Mouth is back doing what he does best: rocking his unhinged, edgy, kick-ass merc skillz--rather than playing the 'Bugs Bunny' version of Deadpool who inhabited most of this series' previous arc. And it's a pleasure to behold; one that climaxes with Wade's inventive 'solution' to Coloruno's invulnerability.

But that's not all, the appearance of a hot redhead signals another development that taps into previously unrevealed Deadpool history, and a novel use for Wade's super-charged healing abilities is brought (back) into play.

There's a lot going on here, but it's well paced and much of it is a pleasant surprise... Agent Preston was a character I didn't care for in the previous arc, but grounding her with the introduction of her family is a development harboring emotional potential; and tying her and the rest of the 'out there' friends Deadpool made in the last arc together is done in a pleasing way and establishes a supporting cast that the Merc with a Mouth has been missing.

New artist Mike Hawthorne makes a relatively unflashy, but solid, debut--appealingly colored by Val Staples--with a less cartoony style than predecessor Tony Moore; one that suits the edgier direction the book's now heading in--and he renders the action scenes well, providing a nice sense of motion in his storytelling.

...I'm looking forward to what's to come in this arc--and I'll hopefully be gleaning insights when I do an interview with Hawthorne this weekend.

Deadpool Preview - issues #7 & #8

Next up for the Merc with a Mouth--it's flashback time as we visit the end of the 'Bronze Age' and find that Wade Wilson used to run around with a cape, headband, and a logo on his chest ripped off of Daredevil's!

Evoking fond memories of the classic Deadpool story from vol.1 in which Deadpool travels back in time to old skool Amazing Spider-Man with his roommate/hostage Blind Al, Deadpool #7 also sets up the next story arc...

Following the events of Deadpool #1-#6, dead S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Preston is inhabiting the Merc with a Mouth's brain--but when Wade makes a deal with a demon to collect the souls of the damned, it looks like it's Preston's soul on the line if he doesn't deliver.
